PayPal invoice refund scam
Scammers send fake PayPal invoices and trick you into calling customer service. They then escalate to remote access, fake refunds, and even pressure you to "refund" funds you never received.
How the scam works:
1. You receive an email with a fake "PayPal" invoice for a product you never bought, with a visible support number.
2. When you call, the scammer claims they can resolve the issue but needs remote access to your computer "for verification."
3. They ask you to log into your bank account, then turn off the screen and use developer tools to simulate a large refund.
4. They pressure you to "refund" the overpaid amount by offering gift cards, cryptocurrency, or bank transfers. The refund is never issued.
✓ Do this:
Close the email and log in to PayPal directly (do not use the link in the message).
Only verify invoices within your PayPal account.
Report the email to abuse@paypal.com.
✗ Avoid this
Do not call numbers that appear in unsolicited emails.
Do not install remote access tools from unknown senders.
Do not send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency in exchange for funds.
